About Shri Mahalasa Narayani Temple

This is an ancient temple dating back to 5 centuries. It houses old and rare artistic carvings in wood on the ceiling of the Sandhya Mantap and most artistic wall paintings in red and white lime and mortar which are of cultural relevance and the specimens of centuries old Indian craftsmanship worthy of preservation.

The wall paintings depict episodes from Mahabharata and Ramayana. This temple is considered as a museum of rare wood carvings and wall paintings of lime and mortar.

Mahalasa/Mhalsa is worshipped as an independent goddess or gramadevata (village guardian deity).  She is the Kuldevi (family goddess) of many Hindus from western and southern India, including Goud Saraswat Brahmins, Karhade Brahmins, Daivajna Brahmins, Bhandaris and Shimpi caste.

Mhalsa is also worshipped as the consort of Khandoba. She is worshipped with Khandoba in all centres of his worship, including Jejuri.

 

By Air: Nearest is Goa International Airport - 123 kms and hubli airport from Kumta.

By Rail: Kumta is well connected to its neighbouring cities and other major cities of India via Konkan Railways. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Cochin, Ahmedabad, and Mangalore are directly connected to Kumta.

By Road:Buses owned by North West Karnataka Transport Corporation (NWKTC) along with luxury private buses runs regularly within the state and between the neighbouring states as well. The service connects Kumta to cities like Mangalore, Belgaum, Mysore, Bangalore and Hubli-Dharwad.
