About Shanta Durga Temple

The first temple at Quelossim in Salsete was crushed by the Portuguese in 1566. The goddess was moved to Kavalem and love was proceeded there. The site on which the first Temple of Shantadurga remained at Quelossim (Keloshi) is known as ""Deoolbhata"" and it is in the ownership of the Shree Shantadurga Saunsthan Committee,Kavale. 

The present temple was built amid the reign of Maratha ruler Chattrapati Shahu of Satara in around 1738 A.D. Naroram Rege Mantri initially from Kochara town in the Vengurla Taluka,(Konkan) was a Mantri (Minister) in Shahu's Court at Satara around 1723. He got accounts to build the new temple for the goddess from Shahu Maharaj of Satara. The temple development began around 1730 . Because of his endeavors, the town of Kavalem was passed on to the Temple by Shahu in 1739.

Its pyramidical shape "shikaras" ascending on the tops of the veneer and the "Sabhamandap" (the fundamental corridor), its roman-curved windows, some of which have the recolored glass window sheets of dark red, yellow, blue, green hues, its crystal fixtures, its door posts, balustraded level arch, the maroon-peach-white shading paint of the temple gives the temple a tranquil excellent look.
