About Ranganathaswamy Temple

The Ranganthaswamy temple in the Karnataka state, India, is dedicated to the Hindu god Ranganatha (a manifestation of the god Vishnu) and is the first of the eight self –manifested shrines . It is one of the five important pilgrimage sites. This temple is also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, Periyakoil, Bhoologa Vaikundam, Bhogamandabam.

The deity is also known as.it was first consecrated in 984 A.D.

The tower over the entrance bears features which eyes are pleasing. Contributions were also made by theWodeyar kings of the Kingdom of Mysore towards building the temple. The temple has gopura and two large prakara around its perimeter. The roof of the mukhamantapa is decorated with a "garland" ("hara") of miniature decorative towers. In the sanctum, the image of Vishnu reclines on the coils of the snake Adisesha,.. There are other smaller shrines within the complex dedicated to Narasimha , Gopalakrishna, Srinivasa  Hanuman, Garuda and the Alwar saints. This temple is of national importance. Jestabishekam, Pavithrothsavam,Sri Jayanthi, Oonjal and many other festivals are also celebrated with great pomp.
