About Swayambhu Ganpati Temple

Swayambhu Ganpati Temple is located at Ganpatipule in Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra. This temple, also known as Ganpatipule Temple, is about 4000 years old.

The Swayambhu Ganpati Temple, known for its unique Ganapati idol,  is built on the Ganpatipule Beach and opens up to the beautiful beach. The idol of Ganapati here is believed to be 'swayambhu'. The idol of 'mooshak'made out of copper is placed outside the temple.

A 400-year-old Ganesha temple, Swayambhu is built of pule which is nothing but white sand and is believed to be a self-created monolith of Lord Ganesha, allegedly discovered 1600 years ago.

The idol of the presiding deity of this temple, Lord Ganapathy, is a swayambhu(self-created/manifested), which is formed of white sand. The idol placed in the sanctum sanctorum, made of copper, gets lit up by sunlight during the sunrise and sunset.

Swayambhu Ganpati Temple, also regarded as ‘Paschim Dwar Dewata’, is at a distance of about 55 km from Ratnagiri Town.

The 'swambhu' Ganpati temple is definitely the most prominent temple in Ganpatipule, however, there are a few temples near Ganpatipule and across the Jaigad creek which are equally frequented by devotees. The 'data bhuja' Ganpati temple is one of the very rare Ganpati temples which depict the idol with 10 hands. Guhagar further ahead of Velneshwar is famed as a temple town with scores of temples dedicated to Shiva and Durga strewn across the small town.
