About Bagheswari Temple

Bagheshwari Temple is one of the oldest temple of Assam. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where 'Devi Durga's' Trishul (trident like weapon) fell down when her body was cut into pieces by God Vishnu, just after 'Dakhshya Yagya' (ritual ceremony organized by Durga's father).

his temple is considered one of the most visited places in Assam. The temple has special importance during 'Durga Mahaashtami' when the buffalos are sacrificed. There is an altar just near the entrance of the temple.Bagheswari Temple is located on the top of in the middle of Bongaigaon town. This temple is one of the oldest and famous temple of Assam having its own importance. Beautiful Bageswari Temple of this town is proposed to be developed as afforested hillock with a garden and a small artificial lake fed by a perennial stream. This would improve the water catchments area of the town and the surrounding environment. The Bhageswari Hill houses acients Shiva temple inside a stone cave flanked either side by another 2 temples mainly temple of Bhageswari and Baba Tarak Nath. This is a temple of its own kind having a large number of visitors. Every year thousands of devotees visit to the Bhageswari temple and enjoy the beautiful hill location of the temple. The Bageswari hill also houses an ancient Shiva temple inside a stone cave and Baba Taraknath Temple. Bageswari Hill is located within the Bongaigaon town and surrounded by the Birjhora Tea Estate. The hill presents a natural watch tower to view the entire town and its surroundings. Bageswari temple is the central of Bongaigaon town area alongwith Kalimandir near Swahid Bedi, Buri Aie of Bhakaribhita , Moharani temple of Khagarpur, Kalikarpat of Kakoijana Hills range, Jogodhatri of Sidalsati etc are worth mentioning spots. There are Rock caves and stone carvings of Jogi gupha hill rocks shows age old traditions and that the Buddhist culture had existed here.
